|WalkingWorks for You|
Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Alabama is pleased to offer a new fitness program tailored to fit Americans of different fitness levels and lifestyles. WalkingWorkssm helps individuals establish and reach their own personal walking goals, so they can achieve a basic level of fitness. Rather than asking people to set aside a big part of their busy day for exercise, WalkingWorks encourages them to find every opportunity to walk more each day, and gives access to tools they need (such as pedometers and walking logs) to track their progress. WalkingWorks is designed for everyone: whether a person has a chronic health condition, is seriously overweight or if a person is already in great shape – all can benefit from the program.
When you join WalkingWorks, you will be asked to sign a pledge form saying that you will make healthy lifestyle choices including walking more for better health. Once you make the commitment to walk for better health, you will keep track of your daily steps.
The President's Council on Physical Fitness and Sports recommends walking at least 30 minutes a day, five or more days a week, building up to a goal of 10,000 steps daily, measured by a pedometer. The recommended 10,000 steps may seem like a lot, but most people walk more than they think. And by making simple choices like taking the stairs instead of the elevator, walking to the store instead of driving, parking at the back of the parking lot instead of the front – most people will be surprised at how quickly the steps add up. Add 30 to 60 minutes of brisk-paced walking a day and the recommended steps are met. If you get creative, reaching 10,000 steps daily is no problem at all.
Through WalkingWorks, Blue Cross offers materials and guidelines to help participants establish their own personal walking program, based on age, weight, overall health and personal goals. It helps you set personal walking benchmarks and weekly goals. Blue Cross’ WalkingWorks web site can assist you in getting started, tracking your progress and keeping you motivated to walk. Walking really does work – it’s a simple change that can have a tremendous impact on your health!
